IoT – How Standards lead to Innovation

Austria does not have to hide when speaking about IT-innovation. Standards can help achieve he necessary lead over competitors.

IoT is more than just a trend. It has established a key role in industry and automotive. The latest report of network provider Cisco claims that 28 billion devices will be connected in 2022. More than half of the communication will happen between devices (machine to machine). How will Austria manage to stand out? What needs to be done in order to push and not inhibit innovation?

IoT4CPS @ Research Festival of the Country of Lower Austria

The Department for Integrated Sensor Systems was invited to present actual research projects to the general public at the Research Festival of the county of Lower Austria on 27.9.2019. Multiple Sensors from the areas of intelligent traffic systems, magnetic sensing and Industrial IoT have been presented during the event, which was held at the heart of  Vienna inside the historic Palais Niederösterreich from 3 pm to 10 pm. In this context also the security activities and trends investigated and developed in the project IoT4CPS have been presented. Many interesting questions of the visitors have been answered during the whole evening. It is estimated that more than 6000 visitors have been counted.

Workshop on Industrial Security and IoT – disseminating Results of IoT4CPS @ ARES 2019

In order to support dissemination activities in the IoT4CPS project, the AIT and SBA Research have organized the first Workshop on Industrial Security and IoT (WISI 2019). The workshop was hosted as part of the 14th edition of the ARES & CD-MAKE conference which took place in Canterbury, UK.

The first session started with a keynote speech by AIT cyber security expert Christoph Schmittner, who provided an overview on methods for ensuring security during the entire life cycle. He also provided insights into the current progress in security and safety standardization activities, with the specific specific regard to two main IoT4CPS application fields: smart mobility and smart production. The keynote session was concluded with an open discussion among all participants.

The first official paper was a contribution by representatives of the German Research Institute for AI. The authors emphasized on evaluating different methods to leverage network features in intrusion detection systems. They also highlighted the techniques of Matrix Profiles, which they use to detect irregularities in signals coming from industrial control systems. For the attacks that do not manifest through changes in physical signals, the authors propose to build a graph for representing the topology of the network. With this graph, one could understand the valid communication paths in the network, and thus detect any anomalies.

An application-oriented survey paper was submitted by our colleagues from the University of Timisoara, Romania. It was very informative to hear about the applicability of different Elliptic-Curve Libraries in automotive applications. The next paper on “Applicability of the IEC 62443 standard in Industry 4.0 / IIoT” triggered a vivid discussion between the authors and the audience. The participants mostly agreed that the challenges in achieving standard compliance are coming from the loose security zone boundaries in industrial IoT systems as well as remote software updates.

Two additional papers provided insights into the latest research results of the IoT4CPS project. The first one, entitled “Requirements and Recommendations for IoT/IIoT Models to automate Security Assurance through Threat Modelling, Security Analysis and Penetration Testing”, dealt with evaluating and improving state-of-the-art methods for security analysis. An additional contribution to the workshop was a submission from Salzburg Research, a partner in the IoT4CPS consortium, entitled “Federated Identity Management and Interoperability for Heterogeneous Cloud Platform Ecosystems”

We are satisfied to acknowledge that the WISI workshop gave a strong support for disseminating the IoT4CPS preliminary results and we look forward to continuing the research in Industrial IoT Security.

Denise Ratasich presents Paper at 13th IEEE International Conference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems (SASO 2019), Umeå, Sweden

Denise Ratasich (TUW) presented her paper Adaptive Fault Detection exploiting Redundancy with Uncertainties in Space and Time (Denise Ratasich, Michael Platzer, Radu Grosu, Ezio Bartocci) at SASO 2019.

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects millions of devices of different cyber-physical systems (CPSs) providing the CPSs additional (implicit) redundancy during runtime. However, the increasing level of dynamicity, heterogeneity, and complexity adds to the system’s vulnerability, and challenges its ability to react to faults. Self-healing is an increasingly popular approach for ensuring resilience, that is, a proper monitoring and recovery, in CPSs. This work encodes and searches an adaptive knowledge base in Prolog/ProbLog that models relations among system variables given that certain implicit redundancy exists in the system. We exploit the redundancy represented in our knowledge base to generate adaptive runtime monitors which compare related signals by considering uncertainties in space and time. This enables the comparison of uncertain, asynchronous, multi-rate and delayed measurements. The monitor is used to trigger the recovery process of a self-healing mechanism. We demonstrate our approach by deploying it in a real-world CPS prototype of a rover whose sensors are susceptible to failure.

IoT4CPS to host WISI @ ARES 2019

WISI 2019

Workshop on Industrial Security and IoT (WISI) to be held in conjunction with the 14th International Conference on Availability, Reliability and Security (ARES 2019 – http://www.ares-conference.eu)

The workshop will be conducted in two sessions and will introduce five accepted papers.

August 26 – August 29, 2019, Canterbury, UK

The factory of the future requires an effective interconnection of machinery, robots, lines, products, sensors and operators to each other and to back-end systems. The industrial propagation environment may also be harsh, mostly metalized, and suffering from man-made, impulsive interference. Industrial IoT priorities are security, low latency, reliability and low cost. However, smart factories are also looking for enhanced services for people and machines that create an added value that is beyond the limits of the production environment, such as indoor localisation, smart logistic support, remote maintenance and access to machine data and advanced IT infrastructure, smart tracking of connected components and products.

In the course of two sessions we will discuss security demands of Industry 4.0, as well as specific security tools and methods, which enable interconnection of engineering activities at multiple levels of security and safety, in order to improve system resilience and to support security lifecycle management.

Mario Drobics on “IoT – How Standards lead to higher Innovation”

Austria does not have to hide anymore when it comes to IoT innovations. Standards give companies a competitive edge. IoT is more than just a trend: It is an unfolding development both in the areas of industry and connected driving. According to a report from network fabricator Cisco over 28 billion devices will be interconnected in 2022. More than half of the communication will happen between machines only. What innovation is Austria planning to come up with in order to stick out? How can we ensure that this very innovation is going to get pushed and not slowed down?
